Small-scale dynamo in cool stars

چکیده

Context. Some of the small-scale solar magnetic flux can be attributed to a dynamo (SSD) operating in near-surface convection. The SSD fields have consequences for granular convection, basal flux, and chromospheric heating. A similar mechanism is expected active convection other cool main-sequence stars, but this has not been investigated thus far. Aims. We aim investigate changes stratification due inclusion F3V, G2V, K0V, M0V spectral types Methods. studied 3D magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) models four stellar boxes, covering subsurface zone up lower photosphere small Cartesian box, based on MURaM radiative-MHD simulation code. compared runs against reference hydrodynamic runs. Results. found efficiently produce field with energies ranging between 5% 80% plasma kinetic energy at different depths. This ratio tends larger T eff . relative change density gas pressure deeper convective layers negligible, except F-star. For F-star, there substantial reduction velocities Lorentz force feedback from fields, which, turn, reduces turbulent pressure. Conclusions. stars introduces significant thermodynamic (especially F-star) velocities.

Small-Scale Turbulent Dynamo

Kinematic dynamo theory is presented here for turbulent conductive fluids. We describe how inhomogeneous magnetic fluctuations are generated below the viscous scale of turbulence where the spatial smoothness of the velocity permits a systematic analysis of the Lagrangian path dynamics. We find analytically the moments and multipoint correlation functions of the magnetic field at small yet finit...

Universal nonlinear small-scale dynamo.

We consider astrophysically relevant nonlinear MHD dynamo at large Reynolds numbers (Re). We argue that it is universal in a sense that magnetic energy grows at a rate which is a constant fraction C(E) of the total turbulent dissipation rate. On the basis of locality bounds we claim that this "efficiency of the small-scale dynamo", C(E), is a true constant for large Re and is determined only by...

Small - scale turbulent dynamo - a numerical investigation

We present the results of a numerical investigation of the turbulent kinematic dynamo problem in a high Prandtl number regime. The scales of the magnetic turbulence we consider are far smaller than the Kolmogorov dissipative scale, so that the magnetic wavepackets evolve in a nearly smooth velocity field. Firstly, we consider the Kraichnan-Kazantsev model (KKM) in which the strain matrix is tak...

Simulations of the Small-scale Turbulent Dynamo

We report the results of an extensive numerical study of the small-scale turbulent dynamo. The primary focus is on the case of large magnetic Prandtl numbers Prm, which is relevant for hot low-density astrophysical plasmas. A Prm parameter scan is given for the model case of viscosity-dominated (low-Reynolds-number) turbulence. We concentrate on three topics: magnetic-energy spectra and saturat...
